The Korean panel maker Samsung Display has begun testing the foldable OLED panels used in the production of smartphones, according to a report by the Korean media, Etnews.

The product is seen as a secret weapon to boost Samsung's smartphone sales and will help Samsung's display not only improve capacity utilization but also its revenue.

The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said Samsung's display was building a test line for a collapsible OLED panel in its A3 production line.

Because it is a test production line, Samsung's display will not initially put production costs and quality control in the first place, purely to produce products as the primary consideration, and the production will be immediately put into the test production.

But once the test production is completed, the 2nd phase of cost and quality control testing will commence in September to further obtain cost and quality data.

In 2019, Samsung's display is expected to produce 1 million pieces of foldable OLED panels, and Samsung's foldable smartphones will be available within 2019 years.

In fact, Huawei, China's handset maker, is also actively laying out foldable smartphones and is also ready to launch in 2019. Samsung was originally in January 2018 in the financial meeting, the question of the legal person said, the folding mobile phone products have research and development plans, but there is no time to market.

Now under pressure from Chinese handset makers, Samsung has been aggressively testing and further planning to officially come out in 2019.

Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone, with a panel size of 7 inches, folds to the inside of the screen, leaving a 1/3 screen to display messages such as time and caller ID when folded.

The majority of Samsung displays, though related to the production of panel modules, have been transferred to Vietnam.

However, the folding OLED panel module will remain in the Korean domestic production. In addition, the LSI Systems Division of Samsung Electronics is working with the wireless sector and Samsung monitors to develop driver ICS for folding screens. and the degree of analysis and existing products are not very different so the design changes will not change much.
